Bucket hats are the most forgiving hats to size — a soft crown, little or no stretch, and mostly combined letter sizes. Start with the same head measurement everywhere on this site: above the ears, level, snug.

What matters when sizing a bucket hat
Crown depth
Bucket crowns vary from shallow (sits up on the head) to deep (can cover ears). Neither is wrong — but the deeper the crown, the smaller the circumference you measure for, is misleading: measure the head, then compare crown depth models by brand.
Packing & travel
The bucket hat's odd jobs — rained on, packed in a bag, slept on — reward buying at measured size rather than cinching. A single hat-sizing strip inside the band fixes a slightly large hat; nothing fixes a small one.

How are bucket hats sized?
Usually in combined sizes (S/M, L/XL — occasionally XXL) chosen for head circumference, or a single One Size around a 57–58 cm average head. Exact fitted fractions are rare outside outdoors-performance brands.
Can a bucket hat be washed back to size?
Cotton canvas can shrink more than it should: after a hot cycle a large label can behave like a medium. Wash cool and air-dry, and expect purpose-made canvas hats to stabilize after the first wash.
Do brims change the fit?
A downward-sloping brim can make a roomy shell feel better than it measures, and a stiff flat brim can make the correct size feel tight when resting on shoulders or hoodies. Try the hat with a collar if you plan to wear it over layers.
Why does my bucket hat sit over my ears?
That is a crown-depth issue, not a size error: deep crowns pull the sit line below the head ridge. If the tape measurement is correct but it drapes over the ears, look for a shallow crown or wear it pushed up slightly.
What size bucket hat should I get if I am between sizes?
Most bucket hats have soft shells with little elastic — go up. Compression of the shell is a styling choice (some like it); a too-small bucket hat is the archetypal summer headache hat.
